Best Ways to Store a Human Hair Wig Without Damaging It

So you finally got your human hair wig. Maybe it’s your first one ever (welcome to the club!), or maybe you’ve been collecting them like they're vintage handbags. Either way, one thing people forget to think about — until the wig is halfway hanging off a doorknob — is: where the heck am I supposed to store this thing?

Let’s talk about how to keep your wig looking beautiful, clean, and comfortable for as long as possible — without ruining it, stretching it out, or advertising to everyone who walks in that you’re storing a wig. 📺 Prefer to watch instead? I've got a full video where I walk you through how to store your human hair wig, step by step — including my go-to Amazon finds.👇 Watch below or open it on YouTube:

Option 1: Use the Box It Came In

If you’ve purchased one of my human hair wigs, you’re already off to a fabulous start. Every wig comes in a gorgeous box (the kind you actually want to display — not hide in shame) and inside that box is a silk storage bag designed to protect the hair.

  • Why this works: The silk bag prevents frizz, tangling, and moisture loss — and the box keeps the wig clean, protected from light, and totally discreet.

  • Bonus: The box doesn’t say “wig” on it. So if someone comes over and spots it on your dresser, it’ll just look like a beautiful accessory box — not a flashing neon sign that screams “ALTERNATIVE HAIR INSIDE.”

You can keep it in your closet, a drawer, or on display. It’s pretty. It’s practical. It’s the no-brainer method.

Option 2: Wig Hanger Rack (Perfect for Closets and Travel)

Let’s say you’ve got more than one wig. (It happens fast. No judgment.)

These wig hanger racks are like little drying racks — but make it fashion. I hang mine right inside my closet, and they fold down flat for travel. You can even hook one over your shower rod when you wash your wig and need it to drip dry.

They’re simple, compact, and won’t warp the shape of your cap. I bring mine on vacation so I’m not laying my wig over a hotel lamp or the edge of the bathtub like it’s doing the walk of shame.

Option 3: Canvas Blockhead or Mannequin (But Don’t Stretch Your Wig!)

This option is great if you style your wigs often or just want them sitting out and ready to wear. But here’s the mistake everyone makes: buying a blockhead that’s too big.

It seems innocent enough — but over time, it will stretch your wig cap, and suddenly your perfectly fitting human hair wig starts sliding around like a toque in a snowstorm. (That's Canadian for beanie, by the way. 😉)

Here’s the golden rule: 🧠 Your mannequin or blockhead should be equal to or slightly smaller than your head circumference.

I’m a 21.5" head circumference, and I use a 21" canvas blockhead. If I used a 22", my wig would slowly grow… and not in a good way.

Here are good options to check out:

Just make sure you choose the right size before clicking “add to cart.” Your future self will thank you. So… What’s the Best Option?

Here’s how I think about it:

  • Long-term storage? The box + silk bag = perfect. Just be prepared to restyle it if it creases.

  • Daily wear? A hanger in your closet keeps it handy and ready to go.

  • Styling or display? Go for a properly sized blockhead so that you don't stretch it out.

If you’re still in the research stage, or you’re just getting started with human hair wigs, I’ve got you covered. My own line of human hair wigs is designed to look ultra-realistic, feel incredibly comfortable, and come in storage-friendly packaging you’ll actually want to keep.
